What Is Sports In The Twenty First Century

In the United States, there are over 20,000 public high schools and 10,000 private high schools. Out of these schools, only 17,000 have a basketball program. With an average of 4 seniors per program, approximately 68,000 high school student-athletes graduate each year with aspirations of playing at the collegiate level.

According to the NCAA, there are
4,000 post-secondary institutions in the U.S.

However, when we consider the number of institutions with a basketball program, it drops to less than 1,500 schools. This means that there are around 6,000 potential spots available for the 68,000 players, translating to less than 5% of high school student-athletes having the opportunity to play at the collegiate level.
